I’ve been facinated and absolutely awestruck by the ongoing success of our search for other planets. The European Southern Observatory recently discovered 5 new planets: http://www.shortnews.com/start.cfm?id=85226; and NASA just announced the discovery of two new exoplanets using its orbiting Kepler telescope: http://newsfeed.time.com/2010/08/26/nasa-discovers-two-new-planets-transiting-the-same-star/ Of course, with the discovery of each new planet, the Drake equation(http://www.planetary.org/explore/topics/search_for_life/seti/drake_equation.html) continually has fresh numbers to insert. As the result of the discovery of so many exoplanets (According to Wikipedia, as of August 24, 2010, approximately 488 extrasolar planets have been doscovered to date: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extrasolar_planet) the estimate of the number of detectable civilizations in our galaxy must necessarily increase. Wouldn’t you agree? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drake_equation#Current_estimates_of_the_parameters
